Labor Day

How do you celebrate Labor Day? Are you aware of the history of this holiday? For many of us, it's simply just another holiday with a day off. Not knowing of the historical protests to establish this holiday. Let us learn about this holiday that seemingly has lost its meaning to the recent generation.

In April 1903, Dr. Dominador Gomez, the nephew of Father Mariano Gomez, led UODF (Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas) to a meeting with then-governor William H. Taft in MalacaƱang. In the said meeting, UODF had made it clear that they wanted May 1 to be recognized as Labor Day. Unfortunately, no resolution came to the meeting. Due to the denial of UODF's proposition to organize, on May 1, 1903, Under Gomez, the UODF mobilized roughly 100,000 workers to protest against unjust employment practices, capitalism, and American imperialism. The workers marched from Plaza Moriones in Tondo onto MalacaƱang grounds to demand fair wages and parity under American rule. After the whole ordeal was over, Gomez was consequently arrested, and, consequently, condemned to forced labor, which he would later be pardoned. Nevertheless, the rally was a premonition of things to come from the movement against Filipino worker exploitation. On April 9, 1908, The Philippine assembly passed a bill recognizing May 1 as Labor Day declaring it a national holiday. The first official Labor Day celebration was held on May 1, 1913, a decade after the initial protests.

Labor Day has such a rich history, plenty of people have taken part to establish this holiday, yet why is it that we don't even bat an eye to this holiday? There are still plenty of problems plaguing our labor system, unfair work conditions, workplace harassment, power abuse, being forced to work overtime, sometimes without pay, etc. Why don't we use this holiday to address those issues? Make a post, participate in rallies, spread awareness about these issues! Use this holiday as a means of bringing to light and fighting against criminal workplace norms. Help make the workspace be safer for workers, that is what Labor Day is all about.
