How do you celebrate Labor Day? Are you aware of the history of this holiday? For many of us, it's simply just another holiday with a day off. Not knowing of the historical protests to establish this holiday. Let us learn about this holiday that seemingly has lost its meaning to the recent generation. In April 1903, Dr. Dominador Gomez, the nephew of Father Mariano Gomez, led UODF (Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas) to a meeting with then-governor William H. Taft in Malacañang. In the said meeting, UODF had made it clear that they wanted May 1 to be recognized as Labor Day. Unfortunately, no resolution came to the meeting. Due to the denial of UODF's proposition to organize, on May 1, 1903, Under Gomez, the UODF mobilized roughly 100,000 workers to protest against unjust employment practices, capitalism, and American imperialism.
